KLM has finally released some information about their upcoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, to be delivered in October later this year, and especially some information about the cabin product and the new business class seat.
KLM World Business Class
KLM has taken the decision not to use their latest business class seat on the Dreamliner but instead to go for a completely new product. As many have anticipated they have decided to use basically same business class seat used by Air France on longhaul flights, their latest business class seat introduced in 2014.
The new product has a 1-2-1 configuration giving all passengers direct access to the aisle. There are 30 business class seats on the Dreamliner, eight rows located between the first and the second door. In contrast to all the previous business class seats used by KLM for the first time the seats now face the window while the two middle seats face each other.
The new seat also has a new colour scheme, more personal space and storage and a 16-inches screen. There is also a new remote control for the inflight entertainment system featuring a small screen giving the passenger the option of a dual-screen experience, for example using the remote control to chat or play a game while watching a movie.
When reclined the seat becomes fully flat and to complement the new seat design new large pillows and blankets will be introduced.
KLM Economy Class
There will be 216 seats in economy class, nine seats abreast in a 3-3-3 configuration. The good news is that the new seat will have 40% more recline and all passengers will have access to a power socket which can be used to charge a table or mobile phone or to use a laptop. Each seat will also have an 11 inches HD screen with touch-screen functionality.
KLM Economy Comfort
Just like on the existing aircrafts there will be a premium economy cabin on the Dreamliner called Economy Comfort. There will be 48 seats in this section located between the business class and premium economy cabins. The configuration is 3-3-3, just like in economy class, but with four inches more legroom, giving a seat pitch of 35 inches.
Inflight Entertainment System, Wi-Fi and new cabin mood lighting
The new inflight entertainment system will offer more than 150 films and 200 TV programs in 12 languages, including a large number of local films from different regions of the world. The system will also offer interactive 3D maps and the possibility to communicate with other passengers on the flight using the Seat Chat function.
KLM has also announced wireless Internet will be available onboard for all passengers, however no information has been given about prices and if this will be available for free in business class.
The Boeing 787-9 will also feature larger windows, a higher cabin pressure and special LED-lighting effects in the cabin.
First flight
The first commercial flight is expected to depart 25 October this year with Abu Dhabi and Bahrain as launch destinations.
