Sometimes the unexpected happens. You spend a late evening in an airport lounge waiting for the last flight home, in this case the Hugo Junkers Lounge at Düsseldorf airport, and all of a sudden the fire brigade appears on the apron outside the window. They do not seem to be in a hurry and there are no flashing lights. It does not look like some kind of emergency so it must be something else, an inauguration perhaps?
And indeed, an inauguration it is and they are there waiting there for the customary water salute. This time for the inauguration of the new route between Düsseldorf and Mahe in the Seychelles, operated by the national carrier Air Seychelles.
Air Seychelles is a partner in the Etihad Group and Düsseldorf is a hub for fellow Etihad partner Air Berlin, so the new route makes some sense with Air Berlin being able to feed passengers to Düsseldorf and onto the Air Seychelles flight.
The route is operated twice per week using an Airbus A330 with 254 seats.
