Emirates has been serving Auckland for many years but always with a stop enroute, in most cases in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane in Australia. But today Emirates unveiled its latest route, a nonstop route between the hub in Dubai and Auckland, significantly reducing the travel time for passengers between the Middle East and New Zealand. This change is possible due to a new technology being introduced, but also because Emirates will change the flight routings to take advantage of stronger winds.

The service will be operated using a Boeing 777-200LR. LR is short for long range and the aircraft is purpose-built for ultra-longhaul flights. The aircrafts has seating for 266 passengers with 8 seats in first class, 42 in business class and 216 in economy class.

The travel time for the nonstop flight is 16 hours from Dubai to Auckland and 17 hours and 15 minutes from Auckland to Dubai, which means a reduction of three hours in each direction.

To celebrate the new route an Airbus A380 will be used for the inaugural flight. Dubai-Auckland is now one of the longest commercial flights in the world.
