United States Customs and Border Protection (US CBP) has selected ten airports for US pre-clearance, of which eight are located in Europe. This means US immigrations and customs will take place at the departure airport. Upon arrival in the US arriving passengers will be treated as domestic passengers with no further checks needed. This also facilitates domestic transfers as any checked luggage can be checked through to the final US destination.
Eight airports in Europe have been selected: Brussels, Amsterdam Schiphol, Oslo Gardermoen, Madrid Barajas, Stockholm Arlanda, Istanbul Atatürk, London Heathrow and Manchester.
Punta Cana in Dominican Republic and Tokyo Narita in Japan have also been selected.
US pre-clearance today is offered at most international airports in Canada, four airports in the Caribbean, Dublin and Shannon airports in Ireland and Abu Dhabi airport in the United Arab Emirates. The introduction of US pre-clearance at the ten new airports is still subject to formal government approvals and will also require a secure US-bound transit area to be built at the airports where passengers can wait for the flights after the US departures formalities have been completed, separated from the regular transit hall.
