This morning the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg cut the ribbon to the new terminal building at Bergen Flesland airport. The brand new terminal building will to a large extent replace the old terminal, providing significantly larger passenger areas, more gate areas and a capacity for growth.

The existing terminal building opened 20 years ago. It was designed to handle 2.6 million passengers per year. Today more than 6 million passengers fly to or from the airport every year, more than twice the capacity the terminal was designed for. With the new terminal building there is capacity to handle 7.5 million passengers per year but in practice up to 10 million per year.

Some facts about the new terminal:

  • Capacity: 7.5 million passengers per year
  • 63000 sqm in the new terminal, totalling 85000 sqm
  • 32 aircraft parking positions
  • 28 self service check-in machines and 28 baggage drop counters of which 12 are self-service, 4 combined (manned or self-service) and 12 manned check-in desks.
  • A new baggage sorting system with a capacity of 2500 bags per hour.
  • A new security control with 8 lanes and fast track with a capacity of 2000 passengers per hour
  • 15 gates with passenger bridges with 6 in the new terminal building and 9 in the old terminal building. There are also 2 bus gates in the new terminal.
  • 9 bars, cafes and restaurants
  • 6 shops and 4 kiosks
  • New airport lounge operated by SAS
