Hampton by Hilton Berlin City West was the first Hampton by Hilton to open in Germany located in the western parts of the capital city Berlin. The hotel opened in late 2010.
Where is it?
The hotel is located a five minutes walk from Zoologischer Garten railway station with rail connections, underground, suburban trains and airport bus to Tegel airport. The hotel is located on Uhlandstraße, a side street to the larger Kantstraße leading to the station. The location is excellent with the main shopping street Kurfürstendamm just a few minutes away with shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment.
The arrival experience
I arrived at the hotel around 6 pm and was immediately checked in by a friendly young woman at the reception. As a Hilton gold card holder I had already been assigned a room on the sixth floor with a street view. The hotel only offers standard rooms with different types of beds and amenities. There are no superior rooms, executive rooms or suites meaning no real upgrades are available. However I was a given a room on one of the highest floors and also given an envelope with internet login details for three devices and a voucher for a snack and a drink at the bar.
The room
The hotel offers 214 rooms, my room on the sixth floor was in an excellent condition and gave a good first impression. Nothing fancy but it was large and spacious with all amenities needed.
The room had a comfortable queen-sized bed, a sofa, work desk and a 26-inch TV. A photo canvas with famous buildings in the city was hanging above the bed.
The room also had coffee and tea making facilities but no minibar.
The bathroom had a walk-in shower, toilet and sink but in contrast to regular Hilton hotels the soap and shampoo were placed on the wall, to be used by several guests, rather than in small bottles. This is obviously more environmentally friendly but does not really give a premium feeling.
Food and drinks
There is no restaurant in the hotel but there are several local restaurants on Kantstraße just around the corner and there are plenty of restaurants in and around Kurfürstendamm a few minutes away.
However there is a lobby bar in the hotel offering beer, wine, cocktails and soft drinks. They also offer snacks and cookies as well as light food such as sandwiches and pizza.
Other facilities
There is a fitness centre on the first floor open 24 hours but no spa facilities. Free wireless internet is offered to guests throughout the hotel.
Service
The service was very friendly, the woman who checked me in even called to the room to check everything was in order and that I was happy with the room. No wait whatsoever when I passed the reception desk and the service was courteous and efficient. Nothing to complain about.
Breakfast
The breakfast was served in the restaurant on the ground floor behind the lobby. A self service buffet with hot and cold items including yoghurt and cereals, bread and cold cuts, fruit salad and standard hot dishes such as scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes. Nothing extraordinary but there was nothing missing, and the food was very fresh.
Final impression
The Hampton by Hilton in Berlin is a middle class hotel of good standard. Although it lacks some of the facilities of a Hilton hotel such as a proper restaurant and spa facilities the rooms are nicely decorated and in an excellent condition, the staff are friendly and the breakfast tasty. However the best aspect of this hotel is the location with walking distance to transportation, shopping and restaurants. For the rates offered some days of the week this hotel is good value for money.
