Where is it?
The Pullman Liverpool Hotel is located by Kings Dock on Liverpool’s waterfront. Although the location is rather nice, especially in the summer, it means a few minutes walk to many sites of interest, the main railway station, for shopping and the main entertainment district. Nothing is incredibly far away, but many things are not around the corner either.
But on the other hand the hotel is excellent if you are heading to for example the Exhibition Centre or the M&S Bank Arena, which are both very close.
The arrival experience
I arrived in the hotel in the evening, taking a walk from Liverpool Lime Street station to the hotel. It takes around 25 minutes to walk from Liverpool Lime Street and it helps to bring a map or use a GPS. If you prefer not to walk or have plenty of luggage you can always take a taxi.
Most guests had already checked in so the reception was empty and I was immediately checked in. The room had already been prepaid so the check-in formalities were quick. As an AccorHotel Le Club Silver member I also received a drinks voucher, good for a beer or a glass of wine in the lobby bar.
Overall the hotel and the lobby gave a good first impression. The lobby is very spacious but also very hip and rather relaxed. A far cry from the traditional business hotel layout.
The room
The hotel offers Superior rooms, Deluxe rooms and Premium deluxe rooms and there are also suites. In total there are 216 rooms.
I had booked a superior room and was assigned one on a high floor with a rather nice view overlooking the King’s dock and the ferris wheel. They call these rooms “Superior room with a river view” as they overlook River Mersey.
Just like the lobby the superior room had a rather hip design while at the same time incorporating the heritage of area. Above the bed there was a large picture showing what the area used to look like back in the days when it was really a dock and there were also some really cool and innovative bedside lamps.
The superior room measured 25 sqm and had a king-sized bed, a small sofa by the window, a small table (rather than a work desk) and a TV. There were also coffee and tea-making facilities. Free Wi-Fi was provided, both in the room and in the public areas.
The bathroom was also very modern and surprisingly spacious and had a large walk-in shower, toilet, wash basin and a good selection of toiletries.
There was a much better (and clearer) view in the morning although it was still rather cloudy outside. A large part of the area is being remodeled right now but it will probably be very nice once everything has been completed.
Food and drinks
The hotel has a restaurant, Wheelers Of St James Oyster Bar, offering seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. There is also a bar, Wheelers of St James Bar. As I had a drinks voucher to redeem I visited the bar in the evening to have a glass of wine. The bar is located in the lobby, next to the reception area and was rather nice. Overall I liked the very cool and relaxed ambience of the lobby.
Other facilities
The hotel has a small conference centre with three meeting rooms and there is also a gym.
Service
The service was very friendly throughout the stay. All the staff were friendly, polite and generally in a good mood and there was absolutely nothing to complain about.
Breakfast
The breakfast is served in the restaurant. Since I had little time in the morning I decided to skip the hotel breakfast and just bought some breakfast items from a local corner shop.
Final impression
Overall I am really beginning to like Pullman Hotels. A few years ago some people described Pullman as a selection of Sofitel hotels that were starting to show their age, that they did not want to spend too much money renovating and which were ‘downgraded’ to Pullman hotels instead. But nowadays many of their newer properties are very nice, very stylish and they all look completely different, usually with some local elements in the design.
The Pullman Hotel in Liverpool provided a very nice stay. Friendly staff, a cool and hip interior with a nice lobby concept and well-appointed rooms still preserving the heritage of the Liverpool Docks. The location is a bit off the beaten pattern from the main city centre but on the other hand it is just around the corner from the pleasant Waterfront area.
